The Camp Illusion
NYSC camp is an enclosed environment filled with young, stressed, and bored adults. When you combine matching outfits, morning drills, and cold Mammy market drinks, people fall in “love” very quickly.
But let me be the bearer of bad news: camp romances rarely survive the real world.
Why It Fails
On day 21, you get your posting letters. The guy you have been buying noodles for is posted to the state capital, and you are posted to a village 6 hours away. Suddenly, the communication dies.
Camp relationships are built on convenience, not compatibility. Many people are just looking for someone to run errands with, share expenses, or pass the time. Once the 21 days are over, reality sets in.
If you meet someone nice, great. But guard your heart (and your wallet). Focus on networking and preparing for your PPA. Don’t spend your 33k allawee funding a romance that will expire the moment you leave the camp gate.
