The Secret to Surviving NYSC Camp

To survive NYSC orientation camp, you must mentally accept that you are temporarily giving up your freedom. Obey simple instructions, avoid arguments with soldiers, eat well to maintain your energy, and make friends quickly to share the burden of chores and stress.

The 4 AM Bugle Wahala

The hardest part of NYSC camp for most people is the sleep deprivation. Waking up at 4 AM every day for 21 days is not easy, especially when you are sleeping on a thin mattress in a room with 30 other people.

My advice? Sleep when you can. If there is a boring lecture during the day, catch a quick nap (but don’t get caught by the camp director).

Mammy Market: Your Savior and Your Ruin

The Mammy market is where you will find food, tailors, charging spots, and cold drinks. It is a lifesaver. But it is also a money pit.

If you go to Mammy every night to eat fish and drink beer, you will finish your pocket money before the first allawee drops. Budget your money carefully. Eat camp food when it is manageable, and use Mammy only when necessary.

Camp is 21 days. It will pass faster than you think. Enjoy the moment, take pictures, and mentally prepare for the real NYSC hustle: your PPA.
