Valid Reasons for NYSC Relocation

If you got posted to a state where the security is terrible or there are zero career opportunities, you probably want to relocate. But NYSC does not care that you “just prefer Lagos.” You need a valid reason.

The official grounds for NYSC redeployment are:

  • Marital Grounds: If you are a married woman, you can easily relocate to the state where your husband resides. You need your marriage certificate, change of name document, and your husband’s utility bill.
  • Medical Grounds: If you have a chronic illness that requires specialized care not available in your deployed state, you can relocate. You will need a comprehensive medical report from a government hospital.
  • Security Grounds: Sometimes, NYSC allows mass relocation from states experiencing severe security crises.

The Unofficial Route

Let’s not lie to ourselves. Many people relocate to Lagos or Abuja without being married or sick. This is usually done through “connections.”

If you have a contact who can facilitate this, they usually do it while you are in camp. However, be very careful of scammers who promise to relocate you for a fee and disappear.

My advice? If you cannot relocate legitimately or safely through a trusted contact, make the most of where you are. Sometimes, the peace of a smaller city allows you to study for certifications or build a remote career without the stress of Lagos traffic.
