Translating HR Language
- “We will get back to you”: We are interviewing other people, you’re on the back burner.
- “You are overqualified”: We cannot afford to pay what you are worth.
- “We are looking for a dynamic culture fit”: We want someone who won’t complain about working late.
- “Next steps will be communicated”: Don’t call us, we’ll call you.
As an HR professional, I’ll admit we speak in code. We have to be polite, even when the answer is a hard ‘No’.
If an interview ends abruptly after 15 minutes with a rushed “we’ll get back to you,” take the hint. Pack your bags and continue your job hunt. Don’t pause your life waiting for an offer letter that is never coming. Stay proactive and keep applying.
