Salary Negotiation Rules
- Never Give the First Number: Let them state their budget first if possible.
- Give a Range, Not a Flat Figure: It shows flexibility.
- Factor in Lagos Wahala: Account for transport and inflation.
- Talk Value, Not Needs: Focus on what you bring to the table.
We all know the economy is doing a madness. But that doesn’t mean you should accept peanuts. When HR asks for your salary expectation, do not stutter. Do your research. Know the industry standard for that role in Lagos or Abuja.
If they offer 150k and you know you’re worth 250k, state your case based on your skills. Don’t tell them about your rent or your sick uncle. Speak in terms of ROI (Return on Investment). “Based on the value I bring in X and Y, my expectation is between 250k and 300k net.” Say it with your chest.
