Who Qualifies for NYSC Exemption?
Not every Nigerian graduate has to wear khaki. If you meet certain criteria, you will be issued a Certificate of Exemption instead of a Discharge Certificate.
You qualify for an exemption if:
- Age: You graduated after your 30th birthday. (Note: It is the date of graduation that matters, not the date you print your call-up letter).
- Military Service: You have served in the Nigerian Armed Forces or the Police for more than 9 months.
- Honours: You have been conferred with a National Honour.
Does an Exemption Letter Affect Your Career?
As an HR consultant, let me be clear: employers do not discriminate against candidates with an Exemption Letter. Legally, it carries the exact same weight as a Discharge Certificate.
If a company asks for your NYSC certificate, you simply provide your Exemption Letter. It proves that you have fulfilled your legal obligation.
The only downside is that you miss out on the “fun” of camp and the networking opportunities. But if you are over 30, you probably already have real-world responsibilities and don’t need to be doing frog jumps anyway.
